If someone is recieving financial aid for college, and their car breaks down and they can%26#039;t get transportation to school, is there a way for them to use their financial aid money to fix their car? This question in not about my situation. But i%26#039;d like to know if people can or do use college financial aid money for other things beside school in certain circumstances.

If not, can someone who took out a school loan use the money for things other than school stuff as long as they paid it back?

And lastly, how does my question apply to government school grants? Can these grants be used for things other than school?

If they are not allowed, do people still get away with it? I%26#039;m not asking for me..I wouldn%26#039;t do that, but lots of my friends say they have used college loan money, grants and financial aid on things completely unrelated to school. Are they talking out of their @ss or is this really possible?

I think I realize what you are saying dude, it is like this. You will Enroll in classes, which will cost a certain amount. Your Financial Aid will be deposited into your Bursars account. It is Like a bank account from the University. After all you tuition, fees, permits, housing(if you live on campus) and enrollment duties are paid, the rest will be credited to your Bursar account. It will either stay there until the next semester if you over paid, or if you wish you can go down there and have them write you a check. The check can of course be used for anything, books, cars repairs, and even some not so wise things if you choose. Spend it on whatever you want. I hope that helps dude.

You are awarded aid based on your budget. If you friends have money %26quot;left over%26quot; after they pay school costs, rent, food, etc. they can do with it what they want. In fact, pat them on the back as they must be living frugally! Look at is this way, the money comes from some where, right? So maybe they used money from their part time job to buy their books or pay rent or fly home for the holidays? (FYI: flying home for the holidays is considered an allowable budget item.) Then they used the financial aid money to pay for something else. It%26#039;s a wash. As for car expenses, they are not usually factored in the budget. However, if you can demonstrate to the school that you need your car in order to get to class (let%26#039;s say you live out in the country and must commute), you can ask them to increase your budget to cover the car repair costs. But this will vary from school to school. What would be cheating would be to lie about your financial situation, e.g. they misreport their income on their taxes, which provides the data for the financial aid calculations.
