Does anyone know of any places that will pay off student loans?

My husband wants to work on getting his Master%26#039;s degree in music. However, he cannot receive his official transcripts until he pays off the $5000 loan he already has with the college. I know that%26#039;s not that much money but we just got a house and we are both teachers at small private schools. Please let me know if you have any ideas.... thanks!

The answer to your question depends on the type of loans and your teaching situation. Perkins loans can be dismissed under certain circumstances. Additionally, up to $5000 ($1000/year for 5 years) can be dismissed of Stafford loans under certain conditions. Check the first website below for more information.

If your husband%26#039;s loans are in good standing, his college should automatically release his loans. If his loans are not in good standing, he can contact the holder(s) of his loans to find out how he can get them into good standing. He can find out who holds his loans by checking his promissory notes.

If you have just bought your house, I would recommend you wait. After about a year in your house, it will most likely go up in value and you can borrow against the new value and pay off the entire loan amount in total.

Some companys will pay off employees college loans if they want them to work for them bad enough. See if your husband%26#039;s company does that. He might have to wait until he pays off his loan to get his Master%26#039;s. This is the real world and sometimes you have to make sacrefices. Might try and get a home equity loan to pay off the college loan. If you can get something lower then 9% now, you%26#039;ll be lucky.

Good luck........Debby

There are ways to work within this situation.

Your husband can speak with the school to which he owes money and agree to a payment plan. He can also present a case that he needs additional education to raise his salary to a level where he can pay back the loan. The school just wants their money and are holding the transcript to collect. If he can present a compelling case that further education will help him pay back the loan, they should listen.

Alternatively he is entitled to an %26quot;unofficial%26quot; transcript. He can get one of these and present it to the school to which he is applying. He can meet with the admissions director there and tell him he is having difficulty securing an official transcript at this time. It is possible the school will review his application and grant a conditional admission based on his unofficial transcripts.
